My personal learning journal of collaboration

The journal of collaboration to find the real Bad Guy in life

Creation of Bonding with Team Give Me Five!

I recall the moment we first met Ginger and Kelly.
Before the second class, I had another group of two. But as Frank's requirement changed from group of two to group of three. My original group had to split, I had to change and I had to find another team.

The decision to join another team, look back was very risky. But after taking classes in this Semester, it is the best and greatest decision I have made to learn for future. Except the fact that I didn't really Seize the Day, which is "Carpe Diem" in Latin, was also on my secondary school badge. And my grades in school are not good as I expect I should be doing.

The moment Ginger, Kelly and I joined together was because all three of us did not have a group so we had to joined and start our group. The group name was "Bondage" by Ginger.
I didn't like the name and changed it to "Give Me Five!" and further extended the idea with my own elements. By that time, I didn't look up to Ginger as most of her ideas and writing was not acceptable by Kelly and I.

But after Kelly had a serious injury, and cannot attend class, which she had no option but drop this semester. Both ginger and I had lost a leader and a cushion between us who can help to facilitate and moderate both of us.

We instantly had many problems of "false conflicts" by Language, Cultural differences, Different accents

Language
We all speak and read English in class, but as we didn't have a common language that we both master at the same level. We met many "false conflicts" and expectation. Ginger thought that Hong Kong citizens should all be literate - that can read and write Chinese, Traditional or Simplified. But without considering and really getting to know each other. I am that very exception that did not learn Chinese in school and can't read or write many common Chinese characters. Which are very easy for Secondary or even Primary School students. Because I didn't learn Chinese in school. Instead I had French as my second Language.

Cultural differences
Without learning Chinese in School, I was not taught any Culture ethics in school subjects such as Chinese Culture, Chinese History. We have Cultural differences in same skin colors
I don't really understand what she thinks for sometimes. And we had role different in family, Where she is already a Mother of a Primary School Student; while I am still living with my parents as a son.

The way we think are very different, plus I don't really understand how it feels about being parents.

Different accents
I still remember the annoyed expression of the salesmen and I. When Ginger ask for the model and brand name of the mobile phone. We bother listened to Ginger patiently and guessed more that five times, but still could not get the model and brand name Ginger wanted. Until a tourist came over and wrote it down. The Salesmen and I was puzzled.
How and what that word would be pronounced in that way?

Time zones
As we both are living in Hong Kong, we didn't have to much different in Time zones
But we had very different use of time. Ginger was efficient in use of time, and wanted to save all her spare time to play with her son. While I was the Bad Guy in this semester, who always ruins their precious time of fun and wait for nothing. Where I am still thinking in air, and has not really written in paper.

Time required to make decisions
My working experience is fewer and all limited to (IT) Information Technology. We always didn't come to a same decision due to our very different in backgrounds and years of experiences. We always take long for me to reply and Ginger always get annoyed because I tend to conform to her decision. Which she thinks is a waste of time. Instead because I had limited experience, I have to get more information and 9 out of 10, after taking for very long time of delayed. I just follow her decision with grievance.
Collaboration with Team Pyracle

Teaming up with Team Pyracle, was even contradictory.

I was the first one sending mail to Team Pyracle, as a team member of Group Give Me Five!
We almost meet the team in person, and I am truly lucky and happy we did not meet. If we had we would have missed out this good times teaming up with Team Pyracle.

The very first impression, I had to Roy was very bad. Because of personal negative feelings.
I thought Roy was just spending time and taking some exchange credits to come to Hong Kong and meet his relative. As he always tell us, he will be spending time with his cousins and playing.

in addition, when he absorbed my idea of Student in our project. I was not very happy on this.

But when he returned from Europe, and telling us he got the job. I started to turn on a different view. In particular, when he was appointed as leader of our group by Ginger. He gave us more insight and direction on how to complete our virtual company of Curriculum Discipuli Cura. And I am very gland and happy to be in this team.

He had convinced us and built trust in our heart, with his action and serving us as a leader.
He had shown us what a real leader show do and perform, by showing the Trust is tough, Trust demands learning, Trust requires leaders.

Conclusion
To summarize on this learning journal of collaboration. I found the real bad guy in me who is dragging my feet and stopping me to go forward. The inner negative self who is too self-center, thinking of taking all the goods and not giving out to help. Indeed, I should seize and look out for the big picture rather than taking the microscopic view of personal success, rather than the success of the whole team. And in realty at work, I should do the same. Be proactive reach out, be efficient and take organization success over personal success.

Further more I read an article about Establish a Communication Protocol. Which we could possibly solve my communication and language problem when facing Language and culture differences in communication

A complete communication protocol would cover nothing less than the following:
o Who is included in the communications?

o What will be communicated?
- What detail level?
- What levels will we require closed-loop communication?

o When to communicate?
- Establishing communication
- Expanding audience
- Sending communication even though there is nothing to report
- Contracting audience
- Ending communication

o Where will the tracking of the communications be maintained?

o Why is this level or depth of communication required for a given issue?

o How will we communicate?
- Phone
- Email
- Posting on Website
- Sneaker Net
- Snail Mail
